Where to stay for the Gaeta Christmas lights

Updated 2 November 2026

Gaeta's Favole di Luce lights are on from 7 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Here is where to stay so you can walk to them, which weekends fill up first and when to book.

In short: to walk to the lights → the centre (Lungomare Caboto) or the medieval old town. On a budget → Formia, 15-20 minutes by bus. Busiest: the Immaculate Conception long weekend (5-8 December) and New Year.

The best areas for the lights

The centre and Lungomare Caboto

This is the heart of Favole di Luce: Piazza XIX Maggio, Piazza della Libertà with the San Francesco fountain, the Christmas market and the lit-up seafront. Stay here and you walk out in the evening without worrying about parking, which is the real problem at weekends.

Medieval Gaeta (Sant'Erasmo)

The old town, with the cathedral, the castle and lit-up alleys. Here you mostly stay in B&Bs and apartments inside historic buildings: the best atmosphere, but with slopes and steps. The Via Annunziata limited traffic zone (ZTL) is closed every evening from 7 pm to 5 am, so ask your host where to park before you arrive.

Serapo

On the other side of the headland, about a 15-minute walk from the centre. In winter it is quiet and prices are often lower than on the seafront. Handy if you arrive by car.

Formia: to spend less

If Gaeta is full or too expensive, Formia is the practical choice: it has the Formia-Gaeta station on the Rome–Naples line and Cotral buses reach Gaeta in 15-20 minutes. Before booking, check the time of the last evening bus, or budget for a taxi back.

Hotels along the Via Flacca mostly work in summer and are far from the lights in winter: for the light festival, the areas above are better.

One night or two?

Two or three hours in the evening are enough to see the lights, so one night works. With two nights you also get a full day in Gaeta: the old town, the Split Mountain, a slice of tiella by the harbour and the Angevin Castle, open every day during the festival (10 am-2 pm and 3-5 pm, closed Wednesday afternoons). Sperlonga is 20 minutes away by car.
